Ballet Ariel is pleased to present its Spring production, an original rendition of The Toymaker’s Doll, Coppelia this April and May

The production is reimagined by Artistic and Executive Director Ilena Norton with dances by Resident Choreographer Gregory Gonzales. One of the greatest comic ballets of all time is retold through original choreography with a Ballet Ariel twist. Children will love the shenanigans of a dancing doll and mischievous girl while adults will be drawn in by the sophisticated undertones of the Pygmalionesque story of a toymaker falling in love with his creation.

Coppelia was inspired by a story written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, whose novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King was the inspiration for The Nutcracker. The ballet premiered in Paris in 1870, with music by Leo Delibes and choreography by Arthur Saint-Léon.

“I was excited to create a Ballet Ariel spin on the classic, reimagining Coppelia to be a more lively and entertaining version with a dancing doll Coppelia to the beautiful score by Delibes,” says Ilena Norton, Artistic and Executive Director of the ballet company.

Ballet Ariel brings beauty and charm, family and community to the holiday season with a duo of ballets

See original productions of Little Women accompanied by live music by Gossamer Winds, and the Nutcracker Suite, performed at two locations.

The first ballet of the holiday production is Little Women, based on the 1869 book by Louisa May Alcott. It follows the four March sisters, Amy, Beth, Jo and Meg, from Christmastime and beyond, as they grow up during the Civil War era and find their place in the world.

For this Ballet Ariel debut, Artistic and Executive Director Ilena Norton wrote the scenario for the production and selected the music to accompany it with Gossamer Winds director John Richardson. That includes a blend of traditional holiday music such as “Away in a Manger” and “I Saw Three Ships” with classical pieces including several by Grieg from his “Lyric Pieces,” plus music by French and American composers.

Christmas is featured especially in the first Act, since it begins on Christmas day, and the story emphasizes virtues such as kindness, selflessness and forgiveness. The choreography highlights the special characters of each sister and events that shape their growth from girls to young women.

“We are excited to debut Little Women for the first offering of our 2025 holiday production,” says Ilena Norton, Ballet Ariel’s Artistic and Executive Director. “I enjoyed weaving elements of the classic story with select music accompaniment to create a joyful reminder of what’s important at Christmastime. It’s fresh, heartwarming and delightful.”

The second ballet of Ballet Ariel’s holiday production is Nutcracker Suite, a selection of dances from Tchaikovsky’s ballet, The Nutcracker. The Suite highlights some of the most famous dances from the holiday-themed ballet from Act II in which Clara arrives in the Land of Sweets. There she is welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and treated to dances representative of various nationalities and cultures.

“Back by popular demand is Ballet Ariel’s version of the Nutcracker Suite. It presents the best of the classic with refreshed choreography,” explains Norton.

“I’m happy to bring this duo of beautiful visuals and engaging storylines together for our holiday production. We try to offer something to audiences that they won’t see elsewhere to provide new and additional ways for Coloradans to celebrate the season.”

In this joyful act, familiar fairy tale favorites assemble for the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré, including Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, the Bluebird and Princess Florine, and Puss in Boots and the Cat. After the guests have paid their respects to the couple, Aurora and Désiré dance a grand pas de deux (for two dancers) before being joined by their guests as the kingdom rejoices.

The production, performed in one act and without intermission, presents a rare and delightful opportunity for fans of all ages to see beloved fairy tale characters together in one place. Appalachian Spring, American in Paris, Dances from Le Corsaire

April 27 at 7:30 pm, 28 at 2:00 pm at the Lakewood Cultural Center – Tickets

The Spring performances in this 25th Anniversary season of Ballet Ariel are “Silver Anniversary Dance Collections”. Here is what you can expect to see:

“An American in Paris,” Ballet Ariel-style, takes Gershwin’s orchestral classic and a charming storyline and creates a narrative ballet. The story of a young American woman traveling to Paris for the first time is transformed by the magic and vibrancy of the magnificent city steeped in history and enveloped in romance. Gershwin’s jazz undertones create the perfect setting for her awakening. Ballet Ariel’s Director, Ilena Norton and Ballet Ariel’s choreographer, Gregory Gonzales have created whimsical and fun dances that bring to life the joys of Paris.

“Appalachian Spring”, composed by Aaron Copland winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945. The score was commissioned for a ballet by Martha Graham with an American flavor. “Appalachian Spring” depicts the day of a wedding at a Pennsylvania farmhouse in the early 20th century as the young couple, a pioneer woman, and revivalist preacher, experience apprehension, excitement, and serenity over the course of the day. “Artistic Director, Ilena Norton, brings a fresh perspective to Copland’s enchanting and pastoral music with a fully developed narrative story that audiences find delightful. Performed on pointe, Norton’s ballet includes choreography from Gregory Gonzales, whose contemporary style integrates wonderfully with Norton’s beautiful interpretation.”

Lovely dances from “Le Corsaire” are part of the program. Le Corsaire (The Pirate) is a ballet about Conrad who falls in love with the beautiful Medora during the Ottoman Empire. In the full Three Act ballet, the three Odalisques and Medora have been purchased by the Pasha for his harem.  He summons them to perform as part of an entertainment.   In the ballet’s conclusion, Conrad saves Medora, and they sail off to further adventures.   Dances from the ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, are staged by Oleg Dedogryuk, assisted by Patricia Renzetti.

A ballet based on the C.S.Lewis book The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Based on the popular book by C.S. Lewis, and with original choreography, is set in the 1940s. The ballet begins when four siblings, Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, visit the Old Professor and discover an empty room with a large wardrobe. Young Lucy opens the wardrobe door and steps in. Her brother Edmund follows her as they find themselves in a wintery forest of the magical world of Narnia. A series of adventures begin that include an umbrella-carrying faun, an evil White Witch, a beaver couple, a kind-hearted lion, and myriad other characters. They, along with the siblings, engage in a mystical battle of good over evil. Although the White Witch traps Narnia in a seemingly endless winter, the great lion Aslan, merry Father Christmas and the promise of spring arriving brings beauty and hope to the holiday season.

Westword said “Norton’s adaptation of the beloved tale is nothing short of magical… Her choreography, rooted in classical ballet but infused with modern flair, brings the complex story to life on the stage.” And OnStage Colorado said “’The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ is a visually delightful holiday ballet perfect for a family outing. Ballet Ariel presents a lovely adaptation of the story with gorgeous costumes, beautiful backdrops to set the stage and engaging choreography performed by the talented cast. The wintry setting and appearance of Father Christmas add to the holiday spirit.”
