Firebird – Spring 2023

Ballet Ariel adds another original, enchanting ballet to its repertoire with the premiere of Firebird. Performed to Stravinsky’s electrifying score, Firebird is the timeless tale of a prince and his princess and the beautiful firebird that rescues them from the evil magician. Ballet Ariel’s production is an intriguing fusion of Michel Fokine’s original choreography and Artistic Director Ilena Norton’s reimagining of this ancient Slavic fairy tale. The result is a stunning, contemporary ballet that pays tribute to its roots, opening with Fokine’s Firebird dance with the prince.

From the moment the curtain rises on the shadowy forest, the atmosphere is thick with mystery and magic. Captured and tormented by nefarious goblins at the command of the evil magician performed and created by Gregory Gonzales, the prince fights for his life as a beautiful princess begs for his release. Yet, it is the firebird that compels everyone into a frenetic dance that builds until exhaustion overtakes them allowing the prince to retrieve the giant egg that contains the magician’s soul. The magician tries in vain to seize the egg but the prince destroys it, vanishing the shadowy forest and its evil inhabitants. The Fokine choreography will be staged by Oleg Dedogryuk, Rehearsal Director and Ballet Master Patricia Renzetti.

Also on the program is the Grand Pas Classique from the Romantic-era ballet “Paquita”. Ballet Ariel will be performing Marius Petipa’s version from the Imperial Ballet with staging by Oleg Dedogryuk.
